4000+ Hmong Arrive in Laos

“More than 4,000 ethnic Hmong have arrived in Laos after being forcibly repatriated from Thailand, despite international protests.

Within 24 hours, more than 4,000 people were removed from the camp in northern Phetchabun province, where they had been living for the past five years. The UN refugee agency, the UNHCR, had not been allowed to visit them beforehand.

The Hmong say they face persecution in Laos because they backed US forces during the Vietnam war.

Thailand says it has been given assurances by the government in Laos that returnees will not be mistreated.

Kao Kalia Yang to Speak Tuesday at Convo of the Valley

“Kao Kalia Yang, the author of “The Latehomecomer,” the first mainstream book by a Hmong writer in the United States, will be the featured speaker at this month’s Conversations of the Valley,.

Kao Kalia Yang, who immigrated with her family to St. Paul when she was 6, will speak at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Grand Banquet Center, 301 S. Second St., Stillwater. The title of her talk is “The Unwritten: A Journey into Writing.”

Lunch and program is $17. It must be paid in advance. To make a reservation, call 651-430-3830.”
